I was looking around on a couple of sites that had people who had done paint jobs with rustoleum paint and a foam roller. I went on rustoleum's site to read up on their paint and noticed they had a paint for the topside of boats. I thought this would work great for an automotive application because it would probably hold up very good to the sun and the weather. I just wanted to check and see if anyone could think of a reason it would be bad for this type of application.
too bad hurculiner costs so much or else it would be worth it to do the whole vehicle! i would assume with the proper prep work the marine paint would be really strong, because chances are its an epoxy type paint.

I roll painted my '92 last spring. Heres the pix I guess... I was looking for marine paint too. Valspar "Brightside" is the Marine Valspar. Couldn't find it anywhere locally. Started with Rustoleum, but had chunks of crap in it. Got a refund and went to Valspar. MUCH smoother paint.
First, cut out all the rust you can find...

The weld in new 18 guage steel. Grind... grind... grind... Both sides AND wheelwheels..

Sand the ENTIRE XJ to bust through the old peeling clear-coat...

I used Valspar OSHA Safety Yellow Industrial Gloss. "Stops Rust".. Thin with mineral spirits till it's like milk and roll on with high density rollers...

First coat. UGH! What have I started! My poor XJ!

Door, meet roller.. Mmmmmm.. Yellow... The bubbles go away with a slight blowing. Or just lightly go back over with the roller again.

Hmm.. Getting better.. About the 7th coat. Wet sanding with 800 grit every 3 coats.

After 18 coats... Wet sanding with 1000-1500 grit... And after rolling on the Herculiner on the new 2x6 steel rockers and lower door panels.

As it it now. All done sanding, using rubbing compound and plain ol' green Turtle Wax..

^^^ That looks pretty good diskman - I've read about a few roller paint jobs that have turned out ok.....I guess it's down to rubbing between coats. Nice job.
