Manual Trans Clutch
Hi, I am one of those new guys with one of those old questions. I have a manual tansmission On a 98 Cherokee sport. This is my first jeep, So i am unsure about how much Travle should be in the clutch pedal. It has to be pushed just about to the floor for normal operation. If this is not normal (witch i suspect it isn't) what steps do i need to take? Any help would be great.

Check your fluid first, the check your slave and master cylinders for leaks, wear, ect. Slave cylinders are common to go out on AX-15 tranny's, and are cheap just to get new. I am remembering thing from my wrangler days, but hope it may help a little. Also, you can take out the slave cylinder from the tranny and see how easy it is to press with your hand. You can also bleed the tranny lines, but I never had success with this myself. Also, on the off chance, mine ended up being like that because the part that is in the fire wall, by the master cylinder, actually broke off and was inside the jeep behind the clutch pedal.
Good luck

Thank you for the quick reply. The fluids are good and i havn't found any leaks. Sounds like the Slave cyl may need some attention. I will check on the linkages for broken parts.

I had to push it to the floor ever since I resurfaced the flywheel. Made a new push rod for the slave to I could use floor mats again. This is a common issue with XJ when clutches have been replaced

My flywheel was resurfaced when I did my clutch, then a week later the master went out where I was having to triple pump it to shift, but now mine works perfect.
Edit; there is a minimum thickness that the flywheel is allowed to be and if you machine shop did not check it then find another one, because an isse like that is from lack of checking things.

I bought mine a year ago. I too thought it was the slave/master, so I bought the slave/master combo from Napa that's a unit and prebled. No change. The PO must have installed a new clutch that's a bit worn now, and had the flywheel resurfaced.
As of now, it's not a smooth "snick" getting it into first gear, and sometimes it takes some finagling to get it into reverse. I guess a new clutch and flywheel are in order for me.

I know this thread is ancient and all, but I wanted to update it with an answer in case anyone was searching.
I replaced the clutch and flywheel on my Jeep. It fixed the issue. Now it's easy to shift in all gears, and it's no longer a pain to get it into reverse.
