it mostly had to do with ease of parts manufacture (i.e. parts interchangeability with the xj) and the fact that complete unibody trucks such as the VW caddy (where the bed is part of the body) are a PITA to manufacture and are no fun to repair...I'd assume that the stamps to press the sheetmetal out would have cost more as well.
