Low Oil Pressure Confusion
Randomly last week while I was driving my jeep I noticed that my oil pressure gauge was at zero. I revved it seeing if the pressure would go up. Nothing. Then I had a week long break and wasn't home, when I came back I looked under the jeep to see if there was a oil puddle, but the only one I found was a maybe half an inch big under the passenger side lca. I checked the oil level and it was below the fill line, so i filled it up to full with some new 10-30w and a little bit of risoline thinking that this would make it have more pressure again. Start up the jeep, the pressure gauge went up to the first tick mark and then fell back to zero. I decided just to give it a little drive to see if that could change anything. When I'd rev it to about 2000 it would go up to the first tick mark and then fall back down again. I'm confused cause it just goes up for a split second and drops down. I've also been checking the temp gauge and it is just doing its normal thing, no ticks or weird abnormal sounds, just the oil pressure gauge isn't working.
I think it may be the oil pump is done because i looked under the jeep and the pump is covered in oil and dripping down on to the passenger side uca and lca. That is the oil pump correct? To the left of the oil pan if your head is facing the front and you're on the passenger side.
Sorry for the long post, any help is appreciated. Oh and this is a 1990.

Where the oil filter is, remove the sender install a mechanical gauge, and verify pressure. Oil pump is inside oil pan, you are experiencing the oil filter adapter leak, there are three orings that seal it. Common leak on the XJ

It sounds like it is your oil sending unit on top of you oil filter not the oil pump the oil pump is inside the oil pan. Anyways, If it is coming from the sending unit chang it out and you should be fine. I almost forgot it can also be the O rings on the oil filter adapter.

No I bet you it's just the sending unit leaking not the filter housing the sending unit will cause the gauge trouble NOT the HOUSING!(think it thru)

So you're suggesting changing out the oil filter and the sending unit? along with the o rings?
is the arrow pointing to the sending unit?
and what is the thing in the other picture just from curiosity?
sorry i forget how to put pictures actually in the post.

the arrow is pointing to the sending unit. my experience is when you are changing the oil filter it can get bumped and loosened or unpluged. when i had my oil changed they broke it and it blew when i was driving down the road. oil went everywhere. the box in picture two is the starter, i believe, the orientation of the picture is wierd. check out that sending unit and oil filter. my jeep was showing the same symptoms.

Change that Fram filter over to a Wix filter! Fram is the worst filter you could use.
Sorry for the double post, just a little computer glitch.

Wix filters are available all over the place. Ask for them by name.
Oil sender should be okay from Kragen's. I think if you have the late model XJs you only wanna get them from the dealer. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.
There are write-ups on the OFA seal replacement. Easy to do and get the seals from the dealer.
Do what this guy did while you've got the sender off. A pipe cleaner would work fine.
