Default Low Oil Pressure

Hey guys. I recently bought a 1992 Jeep Cherokee Laredo. It has 196000 miles and been maintained failry well and adult driven. Its a 4x4 with the 4-speed auto. Anyways i was reading the owners manual earlier due to the fact i noticed my oil pressure seemed low, to me personally. So i opened up my manual and its supposed to read between-20-60 between idle and driving speeds. Mine stays a little below 20. This is after its warmed up and at a constant speed of 55 MPH. The manual says that 13psi is satisfactory, but if your like me, i like it to have the oem specs, so i really want it to go back to 25+. I read that these I6's have problems with the oil pump. I also know from mechanic knowledge, that it could be the viscocity of the oil and how wore down it is. I dont know the mileage of the oil in it, and yes its reading full on the dipstick. Anyone know any other problems it could be? I will update this once i change the oil to 10w-40. Thanks.

It could be that nothing is wrong with your pil pressure and the pressure sending unit is just old and not reading correctly..Oil pump screen might be clogged which might be solved as easily as using a good engine flush product or might require mecahnical replacement...In any event don't worry to much about it and hope you enjoy your new (To you at least) Jeep.

Ya i'm thinking about seafoaming it 3 times, within the next 3 fill-ups. I'm going to put half the bottle in the oil and gas tank. What would be your opinion on Synthetic oil? I know the mileage is high and would be more prone to leaks with synthetic, but it also has its advantages. I'll check on a sending unit in the next few days.

Verify your oil pressure with a "mechanical" oil pressure gauge. Many parts stores will rent you this tool. Temporarily install it where the oil pressure sending unit currently resides.

Then you will KNOW what your oil pressure is. Important to do this with low oil pressure readings, as you can have some inaccuracy between the sending unit and the dash gauge.

Good data = good decisions.
