Default AC Works good but constantly on/off

Hey, been a lurker for a while, got a question.. Bought my 98 Cherokee over the winter and today I finally got to test the AC. It works, works well from what I could tell. But I noticed that the compressor and fan are continually cycling on and off about every 5 seconds.

I know over time this cant be good. Am I just looking at a low freon situation or is there something else I should be looking at?

Thanks In advance.

Check your freon in your A/C. It might be low is why the compressor is kicking on and off.

The compressor will kick on and off as it needs to, but every 5 seconds usually means a low charge. Check the ads in the paper for a "free summer inspection" that mentions a refrigerant check. If it's low, you can just grab a can from WalMart and fill it up. If it's really low, you've got a leak somewhere that should be fixed first. Since you said it's blowing cold, then it's probably not that low

Give it the gas!

It is low on freon. It is not "working good". It is barely cooling and once it gets warm, you will notice that it is not working at all.

Mine does the same thing, and $14 makes it keep making the coldness with a quickness for another 6 months.
