So the last two nights I've headed home from work and stopped at the grocery store and when i get back in and start it up its the loudest ever and feels like the motor is gonna jump out of the hood... it lasts until a few seconds until i hit the gas then it goes away... thoughts on what this could be???
BTW its a '99 4.0
Thanks for any ideas/help

Last oil change was in 4000 ago. Did run some seafoam thru it two tanks of gas ago.
As far as abetter description I don't know what else to say besides its three times as loud when the motors idling after startup. No knocking no high or low rpms. Just loud...

Could be the fan clutch sticking also. Had that problem a few years back on a truck I had, sounded like a 747 engine, but only for about 10 seconds. Found the fan clutch was going bad.

Yea , as Gee Oh Dee points out..what's it doing? A knock, a whistle, a squeal, a hiss, a grow, a tick, backfiring, pinging, rattling, woshing or weereing....(OK spell check has had it! Lol) Is it just the engine reving up a little, as if you gassed it, when you didn't?
If you post it on u-tube and provide the link, that's always fun.
I brought up the Fram because they are known to have a weak anti-drain valve. The oil can run out while its sitting, then when you start it it's got to fill before oil goes to the engine.

I agree with the fan clutch idea. My dad had a 2000 Dodge Durango with a V8, and a friend mechanic of ours unknowingly put a faulty fan clutch on it (Original was starting to act up), and it sounded like a big old Diesel engine, similar to a Garbage truck. Fuel mileage went to crap, since the fan was spinning non-stop. Replaced that again and it was fine.
And thanks for mentioning that fram thing DFlintstone, Guess who's going to the Auto parts store tomorrow lol.

You really have to provide a better description, vs the Charades approach.

If it's the fan clutch, it will seem a little hard to turn when it's cold. Just turn it by hand (with the engine off, of course..lol), and see if there is a bit of resistance to it. Also see if it has any play side to side, or up and down. Any stiff resistance, or any wobble, then replace it.
