Default Loud Knock From Transfer Case when putting it in Drive or Reverse

A loud knock comes from the transfer case when putting it in drive or reverse any ideas what might be causing this?

Its probably not the case. Sounds like worn u-joints popping when the load is transfered. Check the drive shaft u joints for wear/ play.

I was up underneath it having someone put it in drive and reverse so I could see what's up and it's coming from the transfer case.

Sounds like a loose drive chain. Is it an NP231 or 242? Was it in 4WD or 2WD?

I'm not sure which one it is it's an 87 cj pioneer with the 4.0. It does it in both 2wd and 4wd. Just when putting it drive and reverse and that's the only time it does it.

It's probably not fully engaging but hey it's a CJ question on an XJ forum... Unless you made a typo

My 1998 xj with an NP 231 made a similar noise. I dropped the front ds (four 5/16" nuts) and rotated the front yoke back and forth. It was so loose, you could hear the chain slapping around inside.

Yeah that was a typo I don't know why I was thinking about a cj. Mine is an xj lol. How do you tighten the chain up in a transfer case?

There is no way to re tension the chain. It has to be replaced. About $120 for the part .
