That's cool thinking "out of the box" so to speak, but worth investigating. Also leaning on the fan shroud may have shifted it just enough to strike the fan.

Maybe the impeller has now fallen completely off, or is spinning freely on the shaft.

That's what happened to me with my TJ. Stupid plastic impeller sheared right off.

You'll know it quick though if so, it'll heat up past 210 within a few minutes.

I checked the belt and I couldn't find any marks where something was hitting it. I drove around town for about 20 minutes to see if I had any issues. It reached just shy of 210 like it always has and didn't go any higher.

Checked the position of the A/C lines and don't see any marks on them. Checked the fan, Checked the fan shroud. Nothing. This is very weird and I'm not going to be going on any big trips any time soon... I'll also put my lift on hold in case something goes wrong. I have the funds but am reluctant to spend them with such strange behavior.

Gremlins suck..

Well, your impeller is definitely not sheared off if you drove 20 minutes without overheating.

If it doesn't return, considering you've done all you can for due diligence, then I wouldn't worry too much about it.

This may sound a bit off the wall, but stranger things have happened. Maybe a large bug of the beetle variety got stuck where the fan was whacking it, and now it's fallen off.

Might try removing the distributor cap and check for shaft play...

You probably left a wrench on the fan bolts and now it's stuck in the ceiling.

Default Clicking noise

That said, what brand of water pump did you put it? Perhaps it is not coincidental that this tick happened to so soon after that. Given the hz of the click, it seems too fast to be a lifter. Undo the serpentine and spin the water pump by hand.
My 97 ZJ is making the same noise. I thought rod or valve, but then noticed that when I push the lever harder to 4hi it subsides. I'm hoping the linkage just slipped. I'm having trouble adjusting it. If that's not it, I'm looking at a $1600 TC.
