My 89 doesn't have a PCV valve. But does have a metered port on the back of the valve cover. check that and the line from it to your intake manifold. Clean them out with brake clean. Oil on your air filter is from positive pressure in the crank case. If the vacuum line and metered port are plugged up it won't suck down that pressure and the crankcase will breath out thru the fresh air hose on the front of the valve cover blowing oil on to your air filter

i forgot to mention. sometimes when i start up the jeep it will rev high (thinking about 3-3,500 rpm) for about 1 1/2 second and go down. should this be cause for concern or is it just going through its paces. i was asked if it was temperature specific and i'm not sure.
for the blow by issue on mine there is a PCV nozzle in the valve cover that connects to the intake manifold with a vacuum tube pull it out of the valve cover and stick a paper clip or small nail in the hole to pull vacuum then spray some carb cleaner or pull acetone a little at a time till you get good air flow and that will pull the blowby into the combustion chamber and burn it if that dont take care of it you have excessive blowby either rings or valveguide seals the tube going to the air box brings filtered air into the crankcase from the pcv pulling it out once you clean the pcv you should feel a slight vacuum from the hose to the airbox put it up to your cheek to tell. Caution the grommet for the pcv gets hard I broke mine trying to pry it out but they both are cheap at the part store so change the grommet also. If you dont get vacuum you need to clear the nipple on the intake manifold with a small nail also

http://performanceparts.com/part.php?partID=137068

It a Truck Tune up Kit TST16 for 6 cyl Jeeps by Accel.

I got mine at the local Advance Auto for about that same money ( $50)
probably going to get that today. looks like a good kit for the price. EDIT: will this work fine on a throttle body?

My tcase (transfer case) locked itsself in Neutral and I had to take it apart (not that hard) and clean it and put it back together.....if the shifter will not shift it may be the little spring inside the tcase that allows the shifter plat to move...hope this helps
yeah i don't want to take the transfer case apart but if we can't get it working i guess we are going to have to yank it. it shouldn't be too bad though cause i will still be able to drive it with out the Tcase in there correct?

update: replaced the plugs, cap N rotter, and fuel filter (thing was not flowing)

ordered the PCV valve it will be in tomorrow. also on the way as of today is an economy exhaust kit we got from summit and an intake kit off of Ebay.

plugs, cap n rotter looked pretty new. my dad probably changed them out before he gave me the jeep. seems like the engine is running pretty clean.
