Default Auxillary fan question.......

My auxillary fan stopped kicking on, it looks original so I figure I'll change it out. Where is the relay for this that kicks it on and off?

I don't have any diagrams for my 98 showing it's location, I want to change it out at the same time so I know it's all new. If anyone can help I'de appriciate the direction.

might not be the fan unplug it and use some cable to rig up test jumpers strait to the battery that way if it works it might be the relay which is under the hood with a plastic cover over it

BRILLIANT!

What side is the relay on? Drivers or passengers" I'm not looking at it at the moment but I think theres a couple of black boxes with fuses and relays.

Also this trick *may* work for you. I doubt it though... it may just be my quirky Jeep.

Turn on the A/C or another interior air option (defrost, heat, etc.). Mine turns on when I do that, so I know my relay and fan works. But it doesn't turn on when it heats up to the correct temp cause I believe the fan temp sensor is *****'d.

Hope it works for you. Good luck.

Just hard wire it to a switch so you can run it anytime you want IE wheeling. XJs are notoriuos for over heating and Ive never had a problem since I did this.

does it come on when you turn on the AC? If yes it's the temp bulb on the rad, if no it's the relay.

It never comes on even with the AC running, it was working a couple weekas ago so I'm think it's the fan motor or relay.

Both are very easy to check.

http://www.rowand.net/Shop/Tech/images/RelayWiringGuide.jpg

If you apply power (+5vdc) and ground to 86 and 85 (respectively); it'll click in your hand and you'll know it works. Hell... don't even bother doing that! Just take another relay from somewhere else that you KNOW works and try that. I bet dollar to doughnuts that the relay is fine, though.

Your fan can be checked by also applying a ground and power to it. I personally used one of those big, square-assed lantern batteries. I think their +6vdc? Apply power to one side and ground to the other. You get to feel like McGuyver and everything!

Good luck.

Here's a new twist, I changed my oil yesterday right before it started to rain, when I got finished I took it for a spin in the rain and the fan was coming on and going off. The engine was not even all the way warmed up so it shouldn't have been coming on. Today I have noticed it's kicking on and off but has nothing to do with the temp?¿ Maybe the moisture is creating a short but if thats the case it should have stopped today since it was dried out.

Any ideas on that one???

x2. if the relay is bad your fan wont turn on at all. imo get a new relay and start from there or just put a switch inline and you can control when you want the fan on or you can go to schucks or any autoparts store and get an adjustable temp switch

I suggest you switch that relay out with another known good that's already under your hood before you spend the money for a new one. Relays rarely fail outside of being physically damaged/broken.

Just trying to save you some time (and a little bit of money).

But yes, it does sound like something is shorted or like it was said before... maybe it has something to do with your A/C compressor coming on and off. Of course, you could always pull over and pop the hood and see for yourself.
