Default lost with interior

i just bought a 96 xj sport, the PO put in 4x7 speakers in the rear up by the dome light next to the hatch.. he didnt cut the hole to actualy fit them so the speaker sounds like crap.. the outline of the speaker rests ontop of the hole preventing it from moveing to much..
i tryed to change them out with 5 1/4s that i bought for my old jeep but never used them..
i got into the jeep and tryed to take them out.. they wont fit through the hole and if i pull the thing down that far i feel it will snap in half.. i unscrewed the upper side moldings, but it wouldnt break free..

any idea of how to get that thing down with out breaking it?
also do 96's come stock with a 6 speaker set up? there arnt speakers in the rear hach but were on my older 94.. figured PO coulda took em out to save a buck..

any help would be appreciated.
sorry for the long post.
thanks!

its kind of hard to get it off.

the upper metal trim sort of needs to slide out of the way in order the get the speaker bar down.

you might need to take them off, but its not going to snap the thing in half if you try and flex it a little to get it out.

try just taking off more of the trim not just unscrewing the screws near the speaker bar.

edit: my 96 doesnt have speakers in the hatch, though its set up for them. maybe it was an option.

agreed ^^ just take the 3 screws out of the metal trim pieces on the side and drop the whole thing its easier and you install your speakers easier.

I recommend putting a small washer on the backside of the speaker mounting bolts too. (mine came with regular bolts and nuts as well as screws, so i used the bolts and nuts) because off road the weight of the speakers are going to bounce and could possible rip out of the fiberglass.

Saw this happen so when i put in mine they came with an extremely heavy magnet so i didnt want to chance it

Also my 96 only had front speakers and that was it. i had to get the sound bar from the JY

yes sir it did. I would recommend taking it down and re upholstering it =] 3M headliner glue and headliner material from joanns =] and then while they are down you can install the speakers !
