I was about to suggest this, when my brother decided it would be a good idea to redline and kill the ign it did the same thing, full throttle and vroom.

Its called an IAC motor, it stands for Idle Air Control. It is what your problem is sounds like yours has failed. They are not cheap probably closer to 78-80 bucks from advanced auto. I would recommend getting the one at napa for 8 bucks more.

Ok the Idle Air Control Valve lets air into your engine when your throttle body is closed. If it won't start with your foot on the gas pedal you probably have a different problem. Did you ever check to see if you are getting spark?

So you have fuel and spark and it still won't start?

I did watch and listen to it, to me it sounds just like any other car that won't start. After you crank it for a little while pull out a plug and see if its wet.

Also be sure to prime the carburetor and give it a few pumps. Lol im just messing with you but if your having all these problems and if your IAC is working properly then id check your cps, its a royal pain to get to but its a common thing that goes on xj's.

This seems to be one of those situations where something is missing. If you are getting fuel at the fuel rail and you are getting spark at the plugs the only other thing I would check would be injector pulse.
