Quote: WOW $4000 are you serious ? 200,000 miles that`s = 321868.8 kilometers
holy **** run away. Used car dealers know how to hide all kinds of problems and will lie throught there teeth and scam you at every turn ....

I live in Vancouver B.C and jeeps are in high demand out here I bought my 96 @ 224,000 km and all it needed was oil pan gasket, rearmain seal I think but to lateand the rocker cover gasket I paid $2700. PRIVATE SALE

The average life span of the 4.0 if well taken care of is 480,000 km before it needs a rebuild.

I shopped a few used car dealers before I bought my jeep and belive me they where all WELL OVER PRICED by at least $1000.

Just hang in and don`t panic, Go for a private sale and save ur money find one that has been owned by a lady they pop up once in while, Mine was bought brand new by a 60 + lady.
I will say he is right here, you got to be careful with dealers, they hide things well. I would say if you aren't a mechanic or highly knowledgeable with Jeeps or cars in general call a mechanic at Midas, Monroe, whatever you guys have out there and ask them to look it over. I did that and they take a look and make sure everything checks out alright. Not all places have a charge for it, I had them do an oil change without putting new oil in. While they poking around they were able to determine what condition it was in. And only cost me about $25.

I bought mine from a dealer, and I got a good deal, you can get deals from them sometimes, you just got to be careful.

I rolled 450K miles on my old 87 with orginal engine and transmission before it died with regular maintenance..

Ive also purchased (2) 87 xj's for less than $700 a piece both with less than 125K miles, spent less than an additional $500 getting up and running to better than par... There out there, just have to be patient. And do your homework.

Personally, I would look for a XJ w/125K-175K miles on it (Or less if possible). That way you can do some preventitive maintenance and chances are the last owner didnt jerk it up and is selling it to off load it
Hopefully you become part of the 400K mile club.

Good Luck

DID you post that right, again that`s 724,204 kilometers also = to 450,000 miles

And if so what kind of preventative maintenance did you do

Yes.
I am proud to say I put 450,000 US Miles on that jeep.
Well I actually only put on 325K of those miles, as I bought it used with 125K already on it.

All I ever did was Regular maintenance and minor replacements; battery, starter, etc; tune-ups such as oil changes and cap & rotor and plugs & wires, etc.
But it was Org. Engine Block, Cams, Pistons etc and Org Transmission

As well, besides the 2" lift and 30" tires, i never did more than drive it local/highway.
That might have something to do with never needing to replace a broken part

Food For Thought - I only sold it ($500 whole - for parts, even thhough it still ran) cause i got a hole in the gas tank and didnt think a $250 tank was worth it with the miles i had on it. Plus it started leaking oil around 400Kmiles
For the price i paid - I figured i got my worth out of it
