The 96 but get it for less. You can always get it for less.

What's a more fair price? Not a steal, but fair for both...

I guess it depends on where you are. But if $4300 was his starting price. I'd start your offer at $3600. Go up to $4000 max. It does have pretty low miles.

His starting was actually $4600. Probably using Ebay as a guide? HE went down to $4200 for the first buyer that backed out. Seller is a "car" guy. Kept it nice.
But, it is priced aggressively, but he's trying to recoup the money invested. (Recent: Brakes, tires, wheels, hoses, radiator, water pump, etc) It's turnkey.

I'd say at least get it for $4200 then. $4000 even sounds better.

I paid $50 for my 88. Ran the hell out of it for 9 years. Then tranfered all my upgrades to the 99 that was free.

Buying a Jeep for $50 is an outlier occurrence and really has no relevance to the real world. Just saying.
Update: The guy sold the 1996 for $4200 to another buyer.

Actually it is quite revelant to my real world. As an Auto Tech, I come across vehicles that need too many repairs vs the value of the vehicle.

And I was adding my opinion that price is a concideration as well as the model year.

I have a 92 A) because I picked it up for $200 B) If first year of the H.O. 4.0l. Easy to work on. Not a lot of emissions junk to go wrong. And you can virtually sway any of the newer parts including body panels to it. I already swapped out the 242 t-case for the 231 and swapped in a 97 8.25 Rear. Rebuilt the engine with new head, rebuilt the cooling system, rebuilt a/c system and new exhaust and I am sitting at $1900 total investment. Cant really complain. I am working on interior now and fixing rust in floor boards. After that beefing up steering/suspension, upgrading headlights, beefing up front axle. then comes monstalining for the entire exterior.

I got my '87 4.0, AW4 as a trade for a Suburban I couldn't unload on anyone (No one wants a guzzler like that with 250,000 miles on it). So, I say I got if for nothing. It has 160,000 miles on it.

I had to get it to run again (engine mis-fire), get it to keep running (electrical shorts), get it to stop (Drums, wheel cylinders, rotors, tires), get it to giddy up (fuel pump), get it to pass safety (new steering shaft, rear floor pans, cargo pan replaced due to holes).

I bought a $10 cup holder off ebay, a $40 AM/FM Jeep radio and a lot of interior bulbs to make it livable!

All in, I'm up to about $2,000 spent on it since May but I like it and it seems to be ok so far.

Default 96 all the way

I have two 96 4.0 ho 4×4s one not lifted with great throttle response and takes of like a bat out of hel_ the other lifted slower to take off. But getting ready to put on intake from a 01 bigger plenum and egual distribution to ports should 25 to 30 horses when done.
I will say this if you buy a 2000 your good already stock with the new intake manifold and less restrictions on the exhaust end. 2001 and on new intake manifold +25 to 30 horses, epa restricrions -35 to 40 horses. So my two favorite years are 96 and 99. Definetly stay away from 97 and 98.
