renix is the older style engine control that came on the 80s models and early 90s (i think early 90s) it is when renault and amc were still in charge of jeep, i believe.

yes, RENault and bendIX = RENIX
they were from 87-90. chrysler had purchased jeep by then, but was still under the control of AMC until 91, then chrysler took full control. hence the H.O. motor, non renix, open cooling system and the chrysler dual sided keys. oh, and got rid of the vac disco on the xj models.
i'm just glad chrysler was smart enough to leave the xj essentially the same way AMC designed it.

i like the 97 and newer models, the body looks better in the newer models in my opinion. plus it has the newer guages and doo dads. i have a 97 XJ sport.

personally I would go with any of the AMC cherokees anything after 87. auto or 5 speed, if I had to choose I would take the 5 speed. I take these years for the fact lots of the parts came from GM and are cheap and plentiful (wiring, steering column, door locks...ect) the only problem with these years is that your mech skills need to be in good form there is no service light or engine codes to tell you whats wrong.

They're all HO. They just stopped putting it on the emblem after a certain date. But to answer your greater question. It depends on how much you want to spend.

I have two, both '96. You get the best of both worlds...OBDII and old-body styling, upgrades and old school. I meant to get rid of the 4x2, but I just can't seem to part with it!
