91 (pretty sure) they started the HO engines. They were all HO after that point....and if you wanna get technical I believe in 99 they started what they called the "power tech" 4.0.
It has a few more hp, and like stated more emissions stuff. Not really TOO much different than the previous HO years though.

Hands down, a 1999 XJ. Prior year OBDII XJ's were transition years and were dicked up. 2K/2K1 had that off the wall head and ignition system.
1996 was probably the worst.

Everyone says that 97s are one of the worst but I have owned 2 and loved them. Yeah some parts are different but I think they were built better than the rest lol.

Nothing 'wrong' with them, but the '99 has a superior intake manifold. Probably some minor NVH improvements to the unibody as well. '97 was also the first year of the redesign; those always seem to have the most gremlins.

The '97 has a few issues.
Still struggling with OBDII.
Even the CPS on early production '97's were different from late production. The early production '97's used the late production CPS. Who knows what else.
The FSM wiring diagrams look like they were drawn by a child. Many circuits are drawn wrong.

I have a 98 and I can say that over the 6 years I've owned it I've not had an issue that wasn't well documented in this forum as common and simple to solve. Most have said the 97-99 years are a pretty good bet and from my experience, I'd agree.

I hunted down a 95 5-speed. Wanted the 5 speed and the newest components I could get without OBDII. helped I found if from South Texas. We all have our own opinions based off what's important to each of us and they all have their pros and cons. I back the 99+ intake, so I swapped one in

Did anyone notice this thread started 6 years ago with someone asking what year to buy? Hopefully he has made his mind up by now.
That said.... I like my 90. It has the Renix setup, which is just interesting to deal with. It has the classic styling. Almost makes it worth dealing with all the nickel and dime issues. Fun old vehicle to play with.
