Default Locking your auto in 1st or second?

I saw a thread awhile back about being able to wire some switches in that would allow you to keep your auto trans in first gear or second...This was only listed as working on the older XJ's. Does anyone know if this is possible on a 97+?

I couldn't find out about that, but here's one where you can manually lock the torque converter while moving slow if desired.>>->https://www.cherokeeforum.com/f51/ma...rter-tc-14114/

Assuming that you guys in the States have the same transmissions as us here in the UK, then something that hasn't been mentioned is how to lock it in 1st, manualy, with no gearbox mods.

This can be done by bringing the auto selector straight from 'N' to '1-2' in one swift movement when the vehicle is stationary. It also works on our XJ's if you did the same from 'D' too. So typically you'd take a steep incline in 'D' - that way the auto sensors will detect any wheel spin and change up automatically to prevent that, then, when you get to the top and are about to make your descent, stop for a second or so, bring the auto changer back in one movement to '1-2' and make your descent. Then put it back onto 'D' (or whatever) at the bottom.

You can then take it up to the red line in 1st using this method, whereas if you make the selection either pausing at each position, or whilst on the move, it will change up to 2nd. Try this on a flat road and you'll see what I mean.

I read somewhere just a few days ago that on the 97 and up jeeps that it will cause the check engine light to come on and that would be the only problem. I also herd that you should not do it on the newer ones. That being said there is a company called MontanFab.com that has an expensive harness to do this exact mod to the newer XJ's and the light wont come on. So it can be done but I would not spend the money to buy there harness. Here is the link http://www.montanafab.com/products.php

Mike37,
Cool i knew there was a lot cheaper way to do that. So looking at that position 1 is in first gear position 2 is second gear position 3 is like puting it in drive and the trans acts normal and in position 4 the torque convertor is locked? And you only have to wire a three amp dioad in and this will work on the 97 and up XJ's.

this setup is a 1-4 lockup
you still need a bypass switch for normal operation or a fifth position

I have only used the 1-2 lockup part but yes powering the solenoids in the right order will lock it in any gear you want and lock the TC
