A normal 4wd system has differentials in the axles so that when you turn a corner, it will differentiate and not drag a tire; it allows the inside tire which is a much smaller circle, to turn at the same speed as the outside tire.
The disadvantage of a differential offroad is if you lift a tire off the ground or if one tire is sitting on ice, the tire with less traction will spin. So in all actuality, a 4wd with open difs, is a 2wd; one front one rear.
By installing a locker, it locks the 2 shafts together, providing traction to each tire equally which makes a huge difference offroad. HTH.
