So I was cleaning out the Jeep today, and finally read a shiny sticker in the glovebox. Always knew it was there, figured it was some kind of safety crap. Lo and behold, it is, but it's warning me that the rear's locked. Being confuzzed, I jacked her up, put her in N, and boom, both wheels spin the same way.
I feel pretty dumb not knowing this about my own Jeep, but I didn't know any came from the factory locked. Mine's a 99 Limited, with the tow package as far as I can tell.
I mostly am just wondering how many of these came with lockers, and what kind it is.

You're sure it's locked and not an lsd? I have a 99 with a factory lsd both my wheels spin in same direction on a lift too. I'll have to look and see if there's a sticker in my glove box

No. That's the thing, I haven't heard of this before (for some reason) so I don't know what it is. Is there a way to tell a difference between an LSD and other kinds of lockers?

Well before I get hung out to dry, I'm using the term 'locked' pretty loosely. Could be an LSD, I don't know. I was gonna pull the cover and replace the fluid (it's making some noise, mostly the pinion bearing though I think) so whenever I do that I'll post... I don't think there are any tags on the diff though.

Boom, sticker. It's inside the glovebox, to the right side. Also I just figured out how to drop the glovebox all the way. Oil change receipt from 03, bank slip from 02. Hah.

Yep, it says "locking type" but my guess is it's a factory LSD. Basically there are 3 types of diffs: Open, Limited slip and Locking.....the latter 2 being traction enhanced.

I believe a rear limited slip diff was available at extra cost as a factory option. Haven't seen a locking diff as an available factory option.

yup, it's chryslers "trac-lock", or trash-lock as it's better known as.
it is a limited slip differential. both my tj's has it and my xj did from factory before i put a locked 44 in there.

All the up-country XJ's came with a LSD, also includes the factory front 2 and 1 rear recovery hooks as well as skid plates. Up-Country was the name of the "package"
