I believe, and please correct me if im wrong, that they still had the vacuum motor to "lock" the front axles in 91. I also have a 91 and had a vacuum problem that caused the 4 wheel drive not to work until i fixed the leak. Unless i dont completely understand how the vacuum motor thing works it should lock the front axles.

the vacuum thing doesnt lock the diff, it just locks the passenger side axle together in order to use 4wd. so it has nothing to do with having limited slip or not.

and you probably have the 242 t-case. 242s had solid d30s instead pf the disco

It's called 4 wheel drive for a reason. If both wheel loose traction both wheel will turn, ALL 4x4 works this way.

4x4 is actually 2x2, and 2wheel drive is actually 1 wheel drive in an open differential system.

in 4 wheel drive all 4 wheels will spin: yes
However, when one wheel gets stuck it will not spin and it will send power to your non-stuck wheel.

4x4 example: if you cross a ditch sideways, say you have your drive side front wheel stuffed into the fender and the passenger side wheel down in the ditch and your passenger side rear wheel stuffed into the fender and your driver side wheel down in the ditch it will spin your front passenger and rear driver side wheel because they are the ones with the least resistance rendering you stuck..

4x2 example: so you just got an awesome power upgrade or have a set of balding tires and you want to do a burn out. Everytime you go to do that burn out you will only leave 1 tire streak, or if you do a brake stand only one tire will spin. This is because your drive tire has the power going to it and the non drive tire does not have enough power to move the wheel so once that drive tire breaks loose it has the least amount of resistance and therefor keeps spinning.

When you have a locker it replaces your spider gears, which cause the situation listed above, so that both tires get the same amount of power at all times. a good way to check to see if you have a locker is pull up to an obstacle on loose dirt (say a stump) that is just big enough to stop the front wheel. when you drop it into 4 low and give it a little gas to "climb the obstacle" you will then break loose your tires on the LOOSE DIRT. if both back tires leave marks then you have a limited slip rear if only one tire leave marks then you have an open diff, if your front tire that is up against the obstacle doesnt move and your opposite tire leaves marks then you have an open diff in the front as well.

this test needs to be preformed on loose dirt if not you will cause damage to your drive train.

Chances are that you have an open diff unless the PO installed a diff locker.
