The bendix system on the 91 is different from the 94 system. If you pull the relay on the 91 you will gradually lose braking performance. I had the system on my 91 and it was quite a pain. I ended up yanking all of it and replacing it with a 96 booster etc. It worked much better! YMMV

to keep ABS, yes.

but, the 96 booster is a great upgrade for extra braking power

I have this same issue with a 1989 XJ limited. Even if parked once I press on the brake pedal I hear a noise that is similar to an air compressor. I do not know about early years ABS systems so I can not tell if this is normal for the XJ. Any info would be appreciated. Or more information about troubleshooting.

Thanks

How so? I can see it loosing braking ability if its the hydroboost system due to the accumulator pump not working and pressurizing the system
But on a regular vaccum booster?

Default Update

Has anyone seen an update about this? I still have the people and am debating on scrapping the cherokee. Although this and a few minor things then this would be trail ready. I am simply tired of the damn noise. Relay has no affect

The noise you hear every time you press the brake is from the ABS pump and it is normal.
When you not hear the noise and brakes get real hard when braking then you need to replace the ABS pump with a normal brake booster and master cylinder from the same years or upgrade to a dual diapgram brake booster from a newer XJ. Real simple to do and way cheaper then try to get an new ABS pump.
If you not like the noise just replace with an normal brake booster and master cylinder.

IIRC, the older ABS systems have a limited lifetime warranty on a lot of the parts. It doesn't matter how old the Jeep is, or if you're the original owner. If your 1991 ABS is acting up, talk to a dealership and see if they can help you.

It would help us if we knew for certain what type of system you have. Could you take a picture of the brake booster/master cylinder and post it? If it is the older system, then it's not wise to disable it; it's pretty much a fix, or replace issue. If it's the newer style system, (has an old-style brake booster and master cylinder) then disable away! *L* I found it annoying on my 1992 XJ and my 1993 ZJ.

HTH!

I know with GM vehicles, a light comes on the dash when the ABS activates. Is that true with Jeeps?

The light generally comes on if there's a problem with the ABS system but you're right in some vehicles it comes on if the brakes were applied hard enough to activate the ABS.
