ok so i searched the threads and couldn't find any that are quite like my problem.
so here it is: i get in my jeep, start it, and turn on my left blinker. instead of a left blink i get both blinkers on in the back (i.e. hazards), but in the front it is only a left blink. if i turn on the right blinker i get a right blink in front and back. when i turn on the hazard switch i get the hazard blinking. funny thing is that after i flip the hazard switch on and off the left blinker functions properly until i turn the ignition off, after which the problem returns. any ideas? thanks for your help guys

thanks for the search tip. it seems that it is either the combination flasher or the multifunction switch, but how do i know which one? for either one can i get them off any cherokee junker or is it better to just buy new?

Bumping for any results people have had.
I've had this same problem since day 1 with my XJ. Right blinker functions fine, front and rear. Left blinker functions fine in the front, but activates both left and right as if the hazards were on in the rear.
I was also having a problem with the blinkers not always working. Move the switch down, and I would get a couple blinks, then nothing. Move the switch up, a couple blinks, then nothing.
I did replace the Flasher Relay today. It resolved my second issue, the blinkers always come on and stay on now when the switch is in the up or down position, but still having the same problem with the left blinker activating both rear blinkers.
Im wondering if there may be an electrical short or ground some where? Or possibly the blinker (multifunction) switch is going out.

just a thought. take out the front bulb. make sure it is in correctly and is a double element bulb. My wife had bought a trooper a few years back and the damn brake lights would come on with the headlights. low and behold found somene stuck and single element bulb in the tailight ,replaced with dual and all was fine....

Anyone? Sounds like replacing the switch seems to be the fix but I hate seeing threads hang like this without the resolution actually declared. My girlfriend noticed this happening on my XJ while driving behind me the other day. The left side will blink normally if I turn the wheel slightly to the left, so I've been mitigating it that way, but would like to know if the switch is actually the issue before replacing it.
