Default Leaky Windshield

I can get a whole new windshield for $300 to fix the leak. Is it worth the effort to try and find someone to replace the gasket only?

Rust holes where? Under the gasket? How do you fix that? Silicone has not stopped it.

Another factor here is will the company installing the windshield do anything concerning the almost guaranteed rust in the windshield track? Or just smack in a new windshield and you still have the same problem?

Year would help.
I don't know about '96 and down but in '97 and up you can't just replace the gasket.
There is a channel it it that the windshield sits in.
And until removed you have no idea of what rust you might find under there.

The thought just hit me, you may also be able to pull your headliner out to get a peek at the underside of the roof near the windshield. You may see something obvious or nothing at all, but at least you tried. If you see rust and rot, you'll know your dealing with more than just a windshield seal.

As other mentioned, year would help. Also, if you watch the youtube videos, search for "xj cherokee windshield replacement" you get of an idea of what to look for.

My Jeep is a 97. I know you can't just replace the gasket without taking the windshield out. That is why I was thinking a new windshield at $300 would be reasonably price compared to finding a shop to replace just the gasket. I assume Safelite would guaranty that it will not leak as long as the windshield track is not rusted through.

They may offer you a guarantee. I'd be curious to know if they do. Once you've moved forward with them, let us know what they found and how they proceeded with the correction. I am sure you're not the only one with leaks.

Once the technician cuts the urethane and removes the windshield then you will see if and how much rust. Realize that the technician can only "fill in" small rust holes and that does not fix the rust or stop it from continuing to rust out. That comes down to how much longer do you expect to keep the Jeep. Now if there is significant rust to the point where there is nowhere to apply new sealant, well that is a major problem. That would entail replacing and welding in new metal, which I don't know of any windshield company that would do that. Maybe you should call around to some reputable bodyshops that can replace the windshield and do any necessary repairs just in case.

I did pull at the headliner and got my fingers in on the metal. I didn't feel any rust or voids at the edges.
