Default leaky jeep!

ok so my cherokee is with this guy my uncle knows and he said the leaks are coming from the gasket around the bell housing, and around that area. its leaking ALOT. the trans filter/pan gasket, oil pan gasket, rear main seal, and the little O ring seal where the driveshaft goes into the tranny has been changed and none of those are leaking anymore.

what other gaskets are there besides the big bell housing one around the tranny? hes saying its about $140 for the gaskets...is that true?

also, my tranny still doesnt shift out of first gear until about ~4.8k rpms when its cold, about 3-4 shifts (or about 5-7 minutes) later, it shifts smooth and like a new transmission. even when its cold, after that first shift, 2nd+ gears will shift fine, but then i come to a stop, and take off again, itll shift around 5k again, until it warms up then goes to normal shifting in first gear. im gonna have him replace the TPS on that though, i already bought a new one, he thinks its the tranny but i dont think it is becuase ive read alot of people had that issue and 95% of the time its the TPS from what i've read.

heres a video of how it shifts

Wow! That was a HARD shift... lol
Check your valve cover gasket in the back, Ive heard they like to leak.

The trans:
Have you checked the fluid? (ill assume you have)
Adjusted the TV Cable? If not, Ill post a "how to" for you
After the above, its pry time for a new TPS. Hopefully that will fix your problem.

It takes about 2 mins,

To adjust the TV cable you:
1: Push in and hold the release button
2: While holding in release button, push "conduit" in as far as it will go
3: Release button
4: Rotate throttle to WOT, some people do this with the gas pedal. Others do it from the engine compartment.
5: Hold at WOT for a few seconds, cable should ratchet out a click or two.
6: Your TV cable should now be properly adjusted, take it for a test ride.

Here is another post about it on NAXJA
http://www.naxja.org/forum/showthread.php?t=1015963

The TV cable adjusts the Line pressure in the trans, it also has something to do with shift points. It pry wont fix your problem, but its free and worth a try.

Im thinking youll pry need a new TPS. If that doesnt fix it, TCU would be my next bet. But try the TV Cable adjustment and see if anything changes

any idea on the gaskets to fix my leak? $140 seems expensive just for gaskets (not including labor)

40 bucks for a steel core valve cover gasket or 5 for a cork gasket. Thats the only thing I can think of that would still be leaking, after looking at your list of replaced gaskets.
Ive never heard of this "bellhousing gasket" and dont see one listed anywhere... Also, all the oil is contained in the block, so this "bellhousing gasket" wouldnt really do anything anyway.

Or, 85 bucks for a "Sealed Power" gasket set with all the gaskets on teh engine included.

(It shows v8 headgaskets, but if you click "application" youll see its for a 4.0 i6)

Dont think so..

Edit: Just asked a mechanic friend, said hes never heard of such a thing.
Sounds like your mechanic is trying to charge you 100 bucks for a gasket that doesnt exist.

idk where it can be leaking from then..

you also mentioned the valve cover gasket in the back...i replaced that, but from underneath the car it looks to be leaking somewhere above the transmission mount above that crossbar/crossmember. could the valve cover gasket drip that far back or no?

Are you sure its oil?
If its around the crossmember area, Id be looking at the trans.

Hows the muffler bearing, if your "bellhousing gasket" leaking you definetly need look at that too.LMAO Seriously though you might have some trash in the valve body, kinda like a shift kit. so when the fluid warms up it gets a little thinner kinda goes back to normal

Could be the front pump seal on the transmission leaking. Check your blinker fluid to.

does it always leak? ause a while back i pulled waaaay to much weight driving way to fast for waaaay to long and i started smelling trans fluid real bad. what had happened was apparently when these trannys get to hot they have an overflow out the top to let out extra fluid and keep from blowing up. and the smell for me was the fluid burning on the exhaust. and if your shifting that high and hard it might be gettin hot and dong the same thing. just a thought
