If you have a basic set of tools and a Haynes manual, you can do it yourself in a day. If you have another set of hands to help you, it should be done in 4 hours.

dude, i'm sure yo can afford a dropcloth or a tarp to lay under the vehicle. tarp, oilpan, rear main seal, oil pan gasket and a set of sockets and extensions is all you need. oh, and a torque wrench, if you don't wanna risk a wrong torque. even though with all of the extensions on it, you'll get it close at best.

No, you do not have to drop the tranny.
Drop the oil pan and you've got some bolts to remove, but its not really that hard.
GoJeep has a great write up on it.

as he says there, its not really that hard, just takes time to get the pan off and everything. try it out mate!

No, you do not drop the trans in the Jeep. You can access the seal after you remove the pan. From what I understand the pan is the hardest part of the process. On most other vehicle you have to seperate the trans but it is not required on the Jeep. Believe me, if that were the case, the quote you got from the mechanic would have been twice as much. Research it some online, you will find directions on the process.

It is easier to remove the pan if you are lifted. And please get an OEM mopar seal, google and you will soon find out that the aftermarket ones are a waste of time and you will leak soon enough.
