Large thud Sound
When I stop at a light and press on the gas I hear a large thud sound.
I replaced the motor mounts and tranny mount.
It doesnt do it all the time, mainly when Im at a dead stop then I go
foward. Like if everything shifted or something. I have no clue.
Any guess?

re: large thud sound
I am a new Cherokee owner. I have a 98, I have been experiencing the same sound, my thought was the motor and tranny mounts but, have not checked mine yet. I will be interested to see if anything else pops up about this.

Does your noise happen right before you come to a stop? Mine does the same thing. It sometimes does it right when I take off too. I can feel the thump through the floor at my feet. I thought it may be the half shafts but it wasn't. So I'm a little curious too as to what it may be

I have check the u-joints and the leaf springs everything seems fine.
I tired to move the axle for bearing play but nothing.
It only happens when I realse the brake and move foward.
So im guessing that the problem is in the wear.
When im in motion, I can step on the gas and I dont hear a thud sound.

I have the same exact thing on my '99. I know it doesn't have to do with the transfer case because I don't have one, mine is 2wd. I had my front brakes replaced, but not my rear brakes, so I suppose it could be the rear brakes. I don't know, though.
Doesn't seem to be hurting anything, and it's been doing it for about a year. I would love to make it go away, though.

Hey fellas, hello from the great white north.
Don't know that this is the problem but... I installed a used 4" rubicon lift purchased from a friend. Over the period of a few months I heard the same thing, only on initial take off and not while rolling; sometimes when I first applied the brakes as well (felt it more than heard it). To me it felt like the rear axle was rolling and clunking to a stop a half second after hitting the pedal, I was partialy right. My focus was on the rear end or the transmission, but I was wrong on both.
The problem was the bushings in my front control arms were worn out and had so much play that my "front" axle was rolling. I couldn't concieve of this until I saw it for myself and showed a few people. An afternoon and a few cold ones later I kissed that problem goodbye. Not sure if it's happenin to you...
but like JRock said "it could happen to you, cause it happened to me".
Hope that helped a few brothers.

Any easy way to test these for wear? How did you discover it was the front and not the rear? Mine is 98 and was recently purchased from a retired couple. Babied. Checked the trans mounts, drive shaft for play and no eye opening sights. Does completely sound like the rear end is rolling for an additional second or two after coming to a stop. Noted if I roll through the stop like brake and then just before it would come to a complete stop I let it roll forward and no clunk. Started doing it on take off every once in a blue moon but most common on deceleration braking. Have heard such noises with lose lowering blocks back in the mini truck craze dayz. But all of that is still tight. Have a Teraflex 2" spacer and shackle kit to install this weekend so guess that would be the time to research other peoples issues. Search the site for clunks and noises and this is very common but seldomly found!
