well bad news today found out what is wrong. i have 3 colapsed lifters and i also found this in the oil pan. its the skirt to the number 5 piston. i hope this helps someone else out

it did not hurt the cylinder wall at all. i got lucky i caught it in time. and yes its been back together for about 8 months now. it runs like a champ and no more ticks.

Yikes. Just how bad was the knocking? I think all of our Jeeps do that... I would hope it's not due to a failed piston in everyone's case.

it didnt knock it just ticked when cold and would go away when it warmed up. then one morning it got really loud after work headed to my parents and started the tear down.

That's a bummer man. I feel your pain. I finished a engine swap on my 99' Cherokee Sport last Saturday. It had no compression in cylinder #1. The used engine with 70k miles on it was $1,000. She purrs like a Lion now though.
