Default Knocking distributor. ????????

Finally I took stethoscope and located knock, which I believed was a lifter.

distributor shaft has free play.

I took it apart and looks like bearing grease solved the problem.

What shaft has free play?

'Shaft has free play' isn't very descriptive...

I thought you'd been a mechanic for years and years and years?

No, thats me

Pull the distributor and go from there, assess how much play it has. Its fairly simply to remove.

Well, I still need advice from time to time. When I was rebuilding my first AT, I talked to transmission guy probably 10 times.

I opened distributor cap and moved rotor side to side, then I heard the knock.
I removed distributor, knocked out pin, holding plastic round piece, pulled out shaft, greased it, that was it.

I'm pretty sure he's a Google mechanic that doesn't know how to use Google.
