As I accelerate in 2 wheel drive I get a clunk/knocking noise. It stops once there is momentum but if I stop the vehicle and accelerate again I get the clunk !!

Any ideas !!

Had a lookie. The driveshafts seem ok. Only thing I can see is there is a leak from the front diff (think it's called the pinion seal)

noise isn't happening much at all now.

you got to get under the truck and seriously take a deep look at the drive shaft to see if anything is wrong. even then sometimes you cant physically see anything. get in a good position and take the drive shaft with both hands and muscle it back and forth. there should be a little play but if its your drive shaft you will hear the clanking noise.

just had to replace a u-join in my drive shaft and i had the same clunk.

My Dad helped me out, there was a little play but no clunk. I think the pinion seal might be a hint that the u-joint is goosed!

Any idea on the part number. 98 4.0 XJ
