Maybe my 96 is different from your 98, but I watched my locksmith use the programming method described in my previous post. There was no dismantling of my XJ. Mine works perfectly! Money well spent.

Default keyless entry

Hey I have a similiar question about keyless entry too. Mine's a 2000 cherokee and when i recently bought it, it did not come with the key fob. From what I can tell mine's a base model and I haven't seen any of the things (black button on the ceiling) that lead me to believe that I have keyless entry. I'd like to know if anyone knows of any other way to tell if it has it or not. I'm thinking the chances are pretty slim that it has keyless, cause i have seen no dead giveaways, but it would be nice to be able to save some money there.

Thanks in advance!

Hey DMan, go to www.keylessride.com and enter your VIN to see if you have the keyless entry option.

alright thanks for the quick reply. Keylessride.com told me to give the dealership a call and see. So I just got off the phone with the dealership and he told me it didn't have keyless entry installed unfortunately Do you guys know roughly how much it would cost to get it put in? And also what brands are reputable for this sort of thing?

Get a DEI (Directed Electronics) product. They're by far the best aftermarket keyless entry / remote start, etc products. As for getting it installed, probably somewhere around 75 for the labor. That's what I'd charge anyways (old circuit city car installer). The door locks are reverse polarity on our good ol' cherokees so you'll need to use a couple relays (unless a relay bank is built into the product of course).

Hope that helps

Probably cheapest going to best buy (unfortunately), or if you have a circuit city around, some of the install guys might still be around and will do it for some cash.
