keyless entry

my 1996 cherokee apparently HAD keyless entry, and from what i can tell, I believe what i was told by my buddy who is a cherokee nut.. It has power everything, and the little black thing in the ceiling right by the rear view mirror.. i can go take a pic if needed.. my question is this 1 how hard would it be to get the little remote, and 2 would it be easier to just buy a new one and get like the auto start thing too.. i have some nice **** inside my truck, so a working one would be nice.. does the stock one come with an alarm, or just entry? How can i tell? Please help a dude out, ill return the favor if possible:help::help::help::help::help::help::help: :help::help::help::help::help::help::help::help::h elp::help:

This is from my original post.

I just picked up a keyless remote for my Cherokee 96 from my local locksmith. It was $50.00 plus tax and he includes programing. You can see these remotes and order them with free programing instructions at, www.keylessride.com for $49.99.

These remotes have to be programmed at the dealer. Thats the case on my 98 anyway.

no they dont you just have to know how to and the code which you find by taking apart the sensor thing.

I found this on the forum somewhere.

PROGRAMING INFARED KEYLESS PRMOTES
JEEP CHEROKEE
Sit inside the vehicle with all the doors closed.
Place ignition in the OFF position.
Open the driver's door. Leave Open.
Move the mechanical door lever to the LOCK position.
Turn the ignition to the RUN position.
Aim the transmitter at the Keyless Entry receiver and press Lock button.
Hold for five seconds until the door locks cycle.
Turn ignition OFF within 20 seconds.

Note: Don't expect these older type infared remotes to work like the modern type remotes. The working distance is shorter and it is a "line-of-site" remote, meaning it must be pointed towards the receiver in the Jeep.

I too have a 96 with the keyless entry. I'd recommend getting an aftermarket as the range on my remotes with new batteries has never been more then 25-30feet. It is not an alarm.

I have not tried taking apart my sensor but did try that programming write up and it didnt work. If I get the code whats next.
