Keeping cool while towing
I'm looking for any suggestions on keeping things cooler while towing a smallish tear drob trailer. Normally while not towing anything my temp sits close to the line right before the 210 mark but while I'm pulling the camper it sits at the line after the 21 mark and I'd like to try to get it to be closer to or preferably under the 210 mark. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Edit: forgot to mention I'm planning on adding a trans cooler in a couple weeks if that would affect anything

Give the cooling system a good clean and flush.
Replace the factory splash shield if it's missing.
Install a copper radiator.
Install a transmission cooler.
Install an oil cooler.
Don't tow in overdrive.

Definitely get a trans cooler, and assuming you do like most people and put it in front of the AC condenser, then position it so its in front of the mechanical fan. The space between the grill and AC condenser is fairly shallow. My recollection is that only coolers ≤1" thick will fit. I went with a Derale 13502 (13,500 btu), but if I were doing it again, I might go with a Derale 13503 (20,000 btu).
Try to keep the TC locked as much as possible. The TC doesn't lock in 1st and 2nd, but it will lock in 3rd if you put the trans into 3rd and are at the right engine speed and load. And of course it will lock in 4th if you have it in 4th and are at the correct speed and load. Keep engine rpms up to improve fan speed.

Not that you can do anything about it...but the more "coolers" you stuff in front of the radiator, the hotter the air through it is and decreases the efficiency of the radiator cooling and your temps go up. Sadly you can only remove so much heat with the crappy small xj radiator. Cool oil or tranny more...cool antifreeze less. Throw in the heat off the condenser with ac and you reach your limit fairly quickly. And issue, sorry to hijack...where and how do you plumb in an oil cooler? I don't mean the "radiator part" but how do you tap off the pump flow, since its 95% internal..thanks

XJs used for crawling really need forced air cooling, so there is no point trying to mount a passive cooler somewhere other than in front of the AC condenser.
I had contemplated mounting a fan-driven trans or oil cooler in the space in front of the fuel tank. This avoids adding heat load to the engine, but the install is complicated, and integrated fan+cooler assemblies are ridiculously expensive. Ultimately, I decided that for the low cost and ease of putting a cooler in front of the AC condenser, I would give that approach a try, and its been fine.

my aux tranny cooler is mounted directly in front of the mech fan so its always getting some sort of cooling air flow. reading your post 2 back I thought..huh, I have plenty of room to fit my tranny cooler...don't remember size or thickness...then I remembered I have no ac so my condenser has been removed..duh. Any radiator style engine oil cooler mounted almost anywhere will probably cool somewhat compared to no cooling, even if just tied off to the side. I might try a small one in front of elec fan. Will have to look into that sandwich plate device. Thanks

The common approach is to use an oil filter sandwich adapter to add a motor oil cooler.

The optional engine and transmission external oil coolers were mounted in front of the radiator.

Both the the engine oil and transmission fluid external oil coolers were mounted in front of the radiator.
