I've been running a K&N filter for about 1.5 years now on 2 different XJ's and I haven't had any problems yet. I got maybe a 3-4 mpg increase with them. Just clean and oil them regularly. I've also been runnong one on my '76 Power Wagon for almost 10 years and it's still running strong. If you drive in dusty or wet conditions, be sure to clean it more often. Make sure that you keep it oiled. I know some people are against them, but I love mine.

the reusability of a K&N or other is pretty cool, cleaning is kinda stupid and time consuming. I have a K&N on my truck and a AEM cold air on my jeep both look cool but offer little as far as what they boast. Yes they both allow for more CFM but TBH neither vehicle can use all the air availible. Take for example my truck with a 750 Carb and an K&N that can deliver 1200 CFM. Yes they look cool but several hours to clean dry and oil over just ripping one out of the box. Take your pick.

I've got a K&N knock off called Specter only cost $20. i didn't notice any change in mpg or power could be the brand but i doubt it. i had hoped for better of both but the price and reusability is what really got me.
