Personally, even though they cost a little bit, I think these are pretty awesome. And if I wasn't already 6 ft 2 and usually need higher vehicles, I'd install them.

Grats on the XJ! I wonder if the rear was Add-A-Leaf, looks a bit sagged in that photo.
If you're going to wheel it, do some searching for rock sliders. Metal braces that will install underneath your rocker panels and protect the body from harm as well as strengthen the vehicle a bit. As a unibody, the XJ is rather flexy compared to the traditional body-on-frame designs. Most rock sliders you can order with steps if you're interested.
Or... just get bigger tires
