Question Just making sure....

Yes! I have used the "Search" feature, and have done a lot of reading....good stuff! That being said, I just need to feel certain I am interpreting everything correctly--you veterans, please confirm if I am right, or if should just play with Match Box cars!

OK....I have a 2000 stock XJ Sport 4x4. I want more ground clearance and larger tires. It is in excellent condition and only has 70K miles on it.

I believe I want a 3" Rough Country suspension lift (without the extended arms for $100 more!), and I believe I should get 30x9.50 tires.

I am under the impression that:

1. With this kit, I do NOT need extended brake lines, pitman arms, T-case levers, etc.;

2. If I went with 31" tires, there would ultimately be some rubbing at extreme turns; and,

3. Apparently the stock rims might not be wide enough for 31" tires thereby adding cost for new wheels?

Am I missing something? Will my XJ look funny with a 3" lift and 30" tires? I do a lot of rough 2-tracks for bowhunting and camping....just looking for some added clearance. This is my daily driver too, so not looking to make my nose bleed!

Also--The instructions in the RC lift kit conclude with some remark about the possibility of ending up with some transfer case vibration due to increased angle or something....has anyone run into this?

As always, I greatly appreciate the wisdom in this forum!

Thanks,

Dan'o

With 3" you will not need all the additional items, but I have found these kits do not add in an adj track bar,or lower control arms. I would look into these. The tires will fit ok,but you could also have the tire shop help you out and mount a 31 and see how it looks and if it will work,or if you know someone. I have 31s on mine and there is no issue with rubbing unless I turn sharply, but that is fixable, and mine is only lifted 2" on the front at this time.

My lift started out as the 3" RC. I went with 31's and they only rubbed when all the way to the lock, you won't need any additional parts. An adj track bar is not needed at 3".

Stock rims will easily fit 31's. No need for new rims, extended brake lines or pitman arm.

You MIGHT have some vibes seeing as yours is a 2000, but with 3" I doubt it. I had none with mine, and still none at 5". YMMV though.

the thing with the rims, and the rubbing... it's not that stock rims aren't wide enough. It's the backspacing. which is the distance from where the rim meets the hub to the back side of the rim. basically putting on a rim with less backspacing is like putting on wheel spacers, it just moves it out more so your 31's don't rub your lower control arms in tight turns. you can get some nice crager soft 8 rims, 15 x 8, with a 4 inch backspacing at jegs for 39 bucks a piece. 31's will not rub the lower control arms that way, plus your jeep will have a slightly wider stance to help with some of the height you just added to it.

1. If you plan to disconnect your sway bars, you will need longer brake lines.
2/3. run the stock wheels, adjust your steering stops to keep from rubbing on the control arms. wheels with more offset will put the tires into the sheetmetal when flex/disconnected.

Nothing wrong with a 3" lift and 30x9.5's... but personally, I would go 31's.

That's why the guys with all the monster articulation out there add bumpstops, instead if limiting their steering...
