Just installed some 6.5's in the doors.
It was a PITA but I got it done. My cherokee has windows cranks so I couldn't just screw them in like most people with auto windows. I actually had to cut a good portion of the door out so I could move the speakers towards the front of the vehicle. Luckily my cherokee is a work / play rig so I don't care much about it's appearance.
I have an alpine IDA-X303 for a HU and was using alpine 2 way 5.25's. These things were ok but had very little bass and a lot of distortion in the highs when I turned it up loud enough to drown out the tires and exhaust. I ordered a set of Alpine SPS-600 (2 way 6.5's) a while back and finally got around to installing them. All I can say is
Even only off of the HU these things have a ton of bass and the highs do not distort. Can't wait for them to break in. I was debating throwing a sub in there but these have enough bass I'm not worried about one anymore. Next on my list is to get another set for the rear and the Alpine Power Pack so I can give these things 45w RMS instead of the 16w RMS they are currently getting.
If you haven't noticed I HIGHLY recommend these speakers..

Haha.. I wasn't kidding when I said it was ugly.. Part of the gap is still there from the factory covers. I'll see if I can get some pics tomorrow.

Pics as requested.. You can see the gap from the factory speaker grill. It doesn't look as bad since I used sheet metal behind it but still looks out of place. The sound more than makes up for the visual though

Had you spaced the speaker out away from the window regulator would the 6.5 have covered the OEM grill opening?
I need new door speakers and was considering this.

I don't think any 6.5" would completely cover the factory speaker hole. At the best you might just have the mounting holes for the grill exposed.. I'm not sure.
