Just got a 00' cherokee 2.5l 3 speed auto
Hi, I'm new to this forum and wanted to ask for any information regarding the torque or strenght in this cherokee, I feel as if the engine is not strong enough, especially on hills, any advice to increase the power on the engine? Or is it just the way it is?

Where are you at? I wasn't aware that Jeep made a 2.5 gasoline version past 1996. Is your XJ a diesel outside of the US? For future reference, always try to include details such as this when posting on the forum.

Yes.
Jack up the driver and slide under a 4.0 XJ.

I remember trying to buy a 5-speed 4.0L XJ brand new in 2000 and they definitely had 4cyl's available with the 5-speed but only automatic 4.0L's available. I ended up having to settle for a TJ since the 4.0L and manual tranny were non-negotiable.

Don't know what kind of driving you are doing in Guatemala, whether off-road or
highway. The 2.5 probably handles well off-road and doesn't bottom out much.
If you just want a little better performance on hills, you could change the axle gearing.
If it has 3.55 gears, you could change to 4.10, if it has 4.10, you could go to 4.56.
You would probably lose some top-end speed. You could get the same effect
with smaller tires, but to a lesser extent.
If you carry a lot of people and loads, the 2.5 is going to seem under-powered whether
on the highway or off-road. In that case, changing the motor (and you have to also
change the transmission, transfer case, driveshafts, engine mounts and electronics)
may be worth it. Some parts you'll have to get from the US.
Might be a better idea to sell the Jeep and look for a 4.0 model. You would save a
lot of money and probably have a better vehicle.

My parents had an XJ with the 2.5 and 5 speed. I loved that little engine. I wouldn't be towing with it but I never felt like it was under powered considering it's displacement. I wouldn't turn one away for the right price.
