My wife and I sold our vini van and I am now on the hunt for a cherokee.Found an add for a 2000 and in the listing it state's that it has a three speed automatic transmission.
I was under the impression that from like 87 to 01 the auto's were an aw4 four speed.Am I wrong and if so what tranny is it and is it any good.I dont think I like the sound of a three speed.Thank's for any knowledge on this.

 

It's entirely possible that they're mistaken, but I've seen the 32RH in FSMs as used in "fleet" models (typically classed as "X1" rather than "XJ".)

 

Automatic Transmissions

Torqueflight 904 - 3 speed automatic - used 84-86 with 2.8L V6 and 2.5L I4 engines
30RH - 3 speed automatic - used with 2.5L I4 engine 94?-00
AW4 - 4 speed automatic, electronically controlled - manufactured by Aisin - used from 87-01 (87-91 models include a Power/Comfort button that adjusts the shift points)

 

Hm. I knew about the 30RH behind the 150ci I4, but I'd though that the 32RH ended up behind the 242ci I6 in fleet models. Perhaps I got a wire crossed?

What's your source? I'd like to compare it to my own, and see which one of us got something crossed...

gabe, three positions on the shifter (forward gears) but it's a 4spd automatic because 1-2 share the lower detent.

They may have meant to say 3-speed with overdrive,overdrive as being 4th gear, and that would be correct for the AW4.
