Junkyard Upgrades
I wanted to start a thread on CF with a list and conversation about more economic upgrades that can be found at the junkyard. I know Kyle has a link posted to a similar thread on NAXJA, but i found that thread to be cluttered with trash talk and BS. I hope to make this a more friendly and more objective conversation. I hope everyone can help me out and contribute.
WJ
-front LCA's same length as stock XJ LCA's but have a bend for clearance of wider tires
-slightly thicker steel than XJ LCA's and made of boxed square tubing instead of channel
-can be modded to fit XJ by cutting down the bushings to fit in the XJ's LCA pockets
WJ rear LCA's
-don't have the tire clearance bend but are 2” longer than stock XJ LCA's
- slightly thicker steel than XJ LCA's and made of boxed square tubing instead of channel
-can be modded to fit XJ by cutting down the bushings to fit in the XJ's LCA pockets
ZJ
V8 coils give 1” of lift on a XJ
gastank skid can be made to fit a 97+ XJ
rear discs can be swapped onto a c-clip D35 or corp 8.25
V8 tierod is much stronger than the XJs and is a direct swap.
The following vehicles rear leaf packs can be used in combination w/ an XJs mainleaf to lift the rear end (cut the eyes off of the mainleafs). Trial and error will determine how much lift.
Dakota leafs
S10 leafs
MJ leafs
XJ leafs

On the ZJ V8 tie rod and draglink swap...Is this year specific? I was thinking I read somewhere it was the 93+ ZJ V8 rods? I could be wrong and if so remove this post since it won't add to the content...

I think if you change it all out then it will fit any year XJ and I also think that as long as we are talking V8 ZJ 4WD then whatever year will work. If you want that set up Gerr had them on sale in June and may extend them to July if his stock holds up. Contact him now for June pricing. They were $189 shipped but may have gone up.

Do you hear banjos?
93-98 was the only years they made ZJs, so yes it has to be 93+ V8 ZJ. IDK when they starting putting the 318 in the ZJ, I had a 95, and it had the 318. Maybe a ZJ ninja could clear this up for us. Later!!

for the zj tie rod/drag link setup. if you have a 90 or older xj, youll want the zj drag link as it has a larger diameter. for 91+ xjs, you only need the tie rod as your xj uses the same drag link as the zj. just make sure its a v8 zj, as the other zjs use the same flimsy tie-rod as the xj(visually, the two look very different).

ZJ Ninja Here
Yes all ZJ's 93-98 got the 318 as a option. And and in '98 you could also get the ZJ with the 360.....
Something else that is a great mod is you can use WJ knucks on TJ, XJ, ZJ and YJ and it give you hi-steer and bigger brakes.
And as for the leafs added for lift Add Bronco II and Explorers there a stiffer rate gain larger lift than the other. (If I remember right the BII pack add almost 7" of lift)

-for those who have no rear wiper, the wiring and tubing exists already so if you buy the wiper/motor, dash switch and res pump you can add it easily.
-brake boosters from later xjs can be put into older ones with the single diaphragm booster for stronger brakes
-97+ mirrors fit older xjs, the center console can fit too with a little modification
-ford 19lb injectors(5.0l) fit and can be had for cheap
-zj alternators(136amp i believe) can be used to replace stock 90 amp alts.(with minor mods)
-gauge clusters can be easily upgraded(from dummy lights to gauges), make sure you get the right year
-97+ front clips can be used on older models(some modification).
-zj pitman arms are 1" lower to drop the steering linkage a bit
thats all i can think of for now.....

Anyone know the JY axle shaft upgrade you can do to get the larger ujoints? I forget but I seem to remember something about coming off XJ's equipped with ABS??? Hopefully someone can give a definitive on this..

It's YJ not JY, but it's use any TJ or Late model XJ shafts. or if you want to keep the disconnect you can use the shaft from the '95 YJ it had the bigger U-joints also..
