I read on here the explorer shocks will work.

I picked up a 02-05 explorer set but the threads are too small .

Sorry, those are NOT shocks, rather gas springs.

There's a sticky on interchangeable parts, perhaps the gas springs are included.

I'd strongly recommend new gas springs, like these:
StrongArm 4291 Jeep Cherokee Liftgate Lift Support 1997-01,(Pack of 1) : Amazon.com : Automotive StrongArm 4291 Jeep Cherokee Liftgate Lift Support 1997-01,(Pack of 1) : Amazon.com : Automotive

I replaced mine a couple of years ago, huge difference. I no longer had to lift the hatch or bump my head.

You'll need to find a Canadian source.

I bought two at O-reillys auto parts store for 18.00 apiece. They work really well. Sorry don't remember the manufacture.

If you need a Canadian source try autopartsway.ca, I bought mine from them and many other parts, great prices to.

Buy vise-grips, they fit all cars.
Sometimes only one shock is bad. Check which one and replace.

They work, I have them in mine. But they are shorter
So the hatch will not go all the way up.
There really strong though.
