Thumbs up Junk Yard Key Fob

Make sure you try your local salvage yards for key fobs before buying online or from the dealer!
My story:
Emailed Jeep to get the build sheet for my 99 XJ and it came back listing a "Remote Keyless Entry." I didn't get a key fob when I bought the Jeep so I called the dealership and asked how much they were. One dealer said $83 another $110. I thought what the heck does the salvage yards do with them when they get them?
I call my local "u pull and pay" and asked. They said we sell them to a 3rd party and we keep some. So I go down and ask to look over their key fobs and the guy hands me a 5 gallon bucket FULL of every key fob ever made!
I found one that matched the Jeep part# and FCC ID and asked how much? "$10 bucks" sweet!
I then take it to the Jeep stealership because I read on here that the dealer has to program it to the vehicle. The service manager said "You still have to pay the $25 program fee even if the fob doesn't work." I get a call that my Jeep is ready. They key fob programming worked!
$10 fob
$6 batteries
$25 dealer programming
-----------------------------------
$41 Total
Not too bad for a little leg work and digging through a 5 gallon bucket of fobs haha

Not bad, but you can get them for around 20 bucks on ebay and you can program them yourself. Takes just a few minutes to do.

I was going to start a thread about this. I just recently realized that my '98 has keyless entry but didn't come with any fobs. Can I pick up a couple a program them to the vehicle or am I screwed because I don't have any? If you can do it yourself, is there a writeup somewhere?

Default key fob rip off

If you have one or 2 others fobs, there is a sequence for re-setting other fobs to your frequency. Some can be "re-set" with off-on sequencing with the ignition or other simple tricks.

My 2000 has to be programmed at the stealership. Just my luck I guess.

Don't go to the stealership... Mike wanted $85 to program the fob. I went to a local locksmith who did it in 5 minutes for $24.

Good luck!

You will need to get them programmed by a dealer or locksmith. I picked up a couple of used ones for my 97 and had the dealership do it for me. I know the service advisor, so he hooked me up for free

I talked to my dealership. The part number for my '98 Sport is 56008968 for an original and the new replacement part number is 56008968AB. New they are $87. My stealership wants $30 for program.
