jeeps suck
Ok i do like jeeps but right now anyways! It all started with alternator going bad well when i went to take the belt off it doesnt have the normal slide deal for tension on power steering pump, its a idler right under it so it took me a while to figure it out due to book telling me wrong. when i took the belt of the power steering pulley broke, it was cracked all around the metal baring that goes on pump. and then i am going ahead on changing radiator.
Anyways sorry for rant but are all Jeeps like this? Know i cant get the metal bearing off the p.s. pump and hoping a machine shop can cause i cant afford another pump. who makes plastic pulleys anyways thats stupid in my logic. i cant complain about the radiator that was planned but everything else going hay wire wasnt. I am tempted once i get it fixed sell the SOB and get a ford before something else goes wrong.
Jeep is a 99 cherokee sport 4x4 4.0 auto with around 234k so it is high miles.

If you want to sell it then by all means. But I hate to break it to you...if you plan on getting another older vehicle with a lot of miles you aren't going to be any better off. In fact it is a pleasure to work on the Jeep compared to some of the other vehicles I have worked on.
I'm not sure why your power steering pulley is plastic... the one on my 98XJ and the one on my sister's 99XJ are metal. If you have a pull and pay salvage yard around go to an autozone or O'reillys and pickup a power steering pulley puller with their loan-a-tool program. Then pull one off the one at the salvage yard and install it on your Jeep.
Try to cool off. One will tend to break parts when heated. Best to walk off for an hour or so.

I'd take those problems over the nightmare of a waterpump I'm in the middle of replacing (pontiac transport 3400 v6) any day of the week!
Check your local junkyards, I bet the whole pump will run you 15-20 bucks. Good luck, & keep ur chin up!

I just replaced an alternator and I have a 99 and it has the tensioner pulley right below the power steering
I had to take the small fan out (2 screws and a plug) and then you loosen the bolt on the front of the tensioners pulley a few turns then loosen the one on the top left

never seen a plastic pulley on an XJ.
Any parts house that sells PS pumps should have the correct puller/installation tool set for repalcing the pulley.
It's an 11 year old vehicle that has seen all sorts of temperature and weather extremes in addition to normal wear and tear. Sounds typical to me.

Your XJ has 234k on it. Most cars and trucks can't even make it past 150k. I wouldn't hate on your Jeep for even making it that far.
I own two XJs. One of them is an all original '92 with 110k that has been in my family since new, and the other is my lifted '96 with 76k which I go wheeling in and use as a DD and has had 3 owners, one of them being the city of St. Louis, MO.
My '92 has never really given me trouble except for the notorious front caliper failure. Other than that.. it has been an extremely reliable, solid, smooth running vehicle.
My '96 is a different story. It has given me plenty of trouble and has less miles than my '92. I've had the front caliper failure, a trans leak, broken ignition switch, a really saggy headliner, the driver's door hinge fell off the fender and had to be welded back on, my fuel pump and sending unit went out, and I've had an issue with the stock catalytic converter which was recalled and replaced in October 2010.
My guess is the '96 was abused because it was a government vehicle. My '92 has always been well taken care of and is stored every winter. It just goes to show what a little maintenance does.

Here is your plastic power steering pulley replacement for an XJ. You have to remove the pump and press it on.

as a professional mechanic i can also tell you...if you think these jeeps are hard try buying something else and working on it....you actually have my choice for pump layouts...they are far nicer to replace and tighten belts then the earlier setup. i have never had a pump pulley crack and i'm not sure what bearing you mean...unless you are talking about the tensioner pulley.
