Default Jeeps freaking out

I have a 1988 Cherokee with the 4.0 engine. I was at an offroad park today wheelin for around 4 hours today and it was running fine. But on the way home about 6 miles away from the offroad park it started cutting out, back firing and by the time I made it home it died like 40 times. I just recently replaced the crankshaft position sensor. I didn't see any damaged hoses and my plugs, wires, distributor cap, fuel filter are all brand new. Please help.

I didn't go threw any water, just rocks and hills. The engine did make some noise but I can't really explain it. I'll check my coolant levels and let you know.

Did you by chance gas up afterwards and possibly get a bunch of bad gas (water in the gas)? I had that happen once and it took me a long time to figure it out. I changed the cap/rotor, wires, fuel filter (twice), coil and a whole bunch of time diagnosing before I figured it out. Turned out it was just a bunch of water in the gas I had just gotten. It took several bottles of fuel line antifreeze to work it out. The way I detected it was I saw water dropplets on the carburetor (older vehicle) venturies. Just a thought..

I always run shell gas threw it. The only difference is I put a full tank in and I usually only have a half a tank in at a time.

Any temp. It started doing it at running temp so I got it home and let it cool completely down and started and drove it again and it did it again.

Mine was sputtering and cutting out but only when it would warm up. I replaced the stator (pick up) inside the dist. and all was good.

I'm surprised no one said it yet. Check your fuel pressure. Maybe your fuel pump is getting ready to crap out.

it sounds like it really could be a fuel delivery problem since it doesnt matter what temp its at. i just went thru a bunch of crap on my 92 and it looks like it ended up being the computer, but mine was shutting down at 210-212 degrees.fuel possibilities include pump, filter, fuel pump relay, pick up coil, fuel pressure regulator. i would add fuel treatment just in case there may be water in the fuel.
