Jeeping in Abu Dhabi
I have a stock 1991 XJ and I live in a wonderful place to use my jeep. The middle east, in the UAE and the city of Abu Dhabi. It gets very very dusty and sandy here and I was wondering what the best air filter is that I should use. the stock one seems to allow more dirt into the TB than I want. any ideas ?

I have a similar problem, May not as bad as yours. I live in the middle of a farming community with noting gut dirt road all around me. I had the stock air cleaner set up and had to change out my air filter at least once a month. Anyways I put on a K&N filter system and bought a pre-filter for it. All that is a foam filter that goes over the K&N filter but all I have to do is shake it out over so often. It really made a difference at least for me.

i was also gonna suggest the K&N cone filter with the pre-filter.
maybe a snorkel to get the intake up high enough also with a filter bag covering the intake.

I would think KN would be the worst. It allows too much to get through it. Or the oil addidtive would clog it up with dirt too fast.
I dunno I bought one KN filter for the commander and hated it. Not worth the extra money imo at all. No noticeable added performance, no extra gas mileage. and it cost 10 bucks for the cleaning kit. How are you saving money.
Go with el cheapos and throw them out. You may just have to bang yours out and shake it off a lil more often than us.

Not to mention they don't seem to seal right. I put a k&n filter in and had a horrible whistle, no added throttle response, no mpg improvement, just an annoying *** whistle and a filter that allows more dirt/dust in than the stock filter. A friend of mine had the same problem.

I am ignorant as to what a pre filter is. I am assuming you run two air filters and the pre would mean it is the first filter.
Seems like MPG would tank.

for my cone filter, it was a very fine fitted mesh bag that slipped over the cone filter.
ok, i guess there are a few different pre filter bags. mine was the pre-charger.
others are snow-charger and dry-charger.
then the foam wrap filter is apparently called a pre-cleaner.
not sure if you can use a pre-charger on a pre-cleaner or not. maybe be too restrictive?

thanks guys, I did install a cone filter and it seems to work pretty well as long as I clean it every week. pretty dusty here and when I go off-road it really sucks up the dust....but it is much better than the stock. thanks allot.
