Jeep XJ Lifter Tick or Something Else?
Good luck man!
just remember, don't automatically assume lifters, take a good look at the valves and their seating too.
Im about to take my exhaust manifold off for the third time, so I feel your pain.

So I completely forgot to update you guys.. But. I have bad news. The Jeep is still making the noise. I was told it was lifters by my dad and grandpa so I went out of my way bought the lifters, pushrods and gasket and did the whole job by myself. I had a gut feeling that the job was gonna be a big waste of time and I was right.. I seriously don't know what to do. The noise is still there and I am so frustrated that I can't drive it. If anyone else has anyone thoughts on what the noise could be please feel free to leave a comment.
The noise is coming from the bottom end I'm sure. Flex plate bolts were tightened as they were a little loose. New lifters and pushrods and a brand new head as well as fresh oil. The noise also goes with the RPM's meaning if I drive it the chattering/tapping noise gets louder or quieter as the RPM's go up or down.

I didn't see any specifics of work done on the bottom end. I had a cracked piston skirt at 220k miles. I did an in place rebuild to get it back on the road. New pistons and connecting rod bearings. These motors definitely suffer from piston slap. I have had a tick on my '99 for the last 20k miles. Waiting for it to get worse and then I'll put another motor in it.
You can drop the oil pan and have a loo and check all the connecting rods for tolerance etc. Not the easiest thing in the world, but you're probably headed there.
