The OP states it doesn't even click.

As I've said twice before, check your NSS! http://www.bc4x4.com/tech/2010/jeep-...ty-switch-nss/

I put her in neutral and she cranked right up and has been fine since. Maybe it was a fluke thing? Whatever the case I'm just happy that is was an easy, inexpensive fix.

Not a fluke, as I said 3 times it's your NSS...

I don't know of a part called an NSS.

There IS a Neutral Safety Switch, however. Maybe if we're more clear on terminology there won't be any confusion?

OP: A Neutral Safety Switch, or NSS, prevents the starter from engaging when the shifter is in anything other than Park or Neutral.

The NSS on our XJ's is KNOWN for acting up, preventing it from starting. Mine did it almost every time, and I had to push the shifter slightly forward to get it to start. Then one day, the problem went away. Once in a while it'll do it again, once or twice, but it's not as constant as it used to be.

Your Neutral Safety Switch is faulty. Either live with it and risk getting stranded, attempt to disassemble and clean it, or just replace it.

Very good info sometimes we do forget to expand on terms that people may not know.

Not saying you weren't clear at all just that sometime we use terms people may not know. P.s. I looked up your link thank you I think I will be doing that to mine soon.

If I ever get around to it I need to do it as well. I have a no start sometimes due to NSS, putting it in neutral always does the trick. My reverse lights on the other hand rarely work.

HAHAHA If my reverse lights work ITS A DAMN GOOD DAY. I have about 10 times a month where i have to nudge it farther into park to start then about once a month where i have to try and find the 1/4 millimeter spot in neutral where it will work. lol Those days are not fun.\

I think I will pull one from the J.Y. clean it and then swap them.

Be careful there buddy. We don't really know what's beyond "Park". If you nudge it too hard, too far into or beyond "Park" then you might go back in time (LOL)...

I know there have been time where it felt like the fabric of time itself was shifting around me. Luckily I have been able to pull it back into reality.

Does the NSS have a wire that connects to the bottom of the starter relay? I ask because my '90 will do the no-start crap sometimes and grounding that connector lets it start.
