It'd be cheaper and less hassle to just replace the fuel filter... autozone's got them for $15-$20...

You're gonna think I'm nuts, but check 'em anyway...

Bellhousing to engine bolts. My son's rig had a similiar problem with severe studdering and surging. We found the bolts a 3 and 9 oclock had come loose and 1 of the top bolts was just gone. The engine and tranny were moving around and that caused the CPS to send all kinds of screwed up signals to the PCM. No codes reported because it takes 50 rotations to set a code. Ours happened fast so it took a while before a code popped up.

We replaced all the hardware and haven't had a problem since.

Worth a quick look if nothing else.
