Default Jeep starts, then parked, then won't start, sits, then quickly starts

Hi everyone,
I'm brand new to this forum and I wish to say hello to all members. I have a 1989 Jeep Cherokee Pioneer. Six cylinders I've own for 5 years. Recently, I've been having a starting problem. In the morning I started my Jeep with no problem. Parked it for 1 hour, then I tried to start. As it crank over rapidly but just would not fire up. I waited for 20 minutes and then it fired up with just a quick touch of the key. Did an errand on the same day and tried to start again but with no luck. I then called AAA and they towed the jeep to my home. Just as it was rolled off the tow truck, I tried to start and it quickly fired up. Later on the car sat for 2 hours and as I tried to fire up the jeep, it failed to start. Anyone had a similar problem. The jeep has 235,000 miles. Recently, I replaced the gas filter. The jeep runs excellent. No oil burning, engine sounds smooth and again the vehicle runs great.
I appreciate any help or suggestions. Thanks in advance.

sounds like a spark issue. i haven't dealt with too many issues like this so getting another opinion is definitely a must. when was the last time you did your cap/rotor/plugs/wires?

Another problem may be a vapor lock, try bleeding the valve on the fuel rail and check the pressure on it also, it should be around 35-55psi...Tj

welcome

first thing you need to find out is if its getting spark
when you are having the starting problem

remove one of the plug wires slide a screwdriver into the plug boot
the hold the hold the boot with your hand
hold the shaft of the screwdriver about 1/4" away from a metal part like head bolt or some think like that
have someone crank the motor you should get and arc

no spark you have a ignition issue
if you have spark it fuel issue

then we can get to work on the problem

if I was to guess I would check the ignition switch first

Hi everyone,
As I continue this morning to try to find my problem, my jeep did not start. Waited 30 minutes and bingo, it started.
After an hour went by I tried to start and it was cranking over, but with a no start. I disconnected the large 3 inch hose from the air filter box that goes to I believe is called the throttle body and while a friend tried to start with no luck I sprayed some starting fluid threw the large air filter hose and the car immediately started. So my problem appears to be a fuel problem. Any suggestion to where I should go from here. TrekkerJmm, mention the fuel bleeder valve on the fuel rail. Do I need to have the car running to bleed? Is my fuel pump failing?
I appreciate all the help I'm getting

Hi Mike37,
Thanks for your reply. I believe the fuel pump is located inside the gas tank but where is the regulator located?

Mike37, or anyone, please...
1. Is there anyway to test the fuel regulator?
2. Bleeding the valve on the fuel rail, When car is running? and how far can
the valve bleeding screw be unscrewed?
and thanks again

the test port is like a tire valve you just push in on the little pin in the middle fuel should squirt out

most auto part stores will test it for you
but it gotta be runing

Schmoozer,
Thanks for the pix. As an update on my starting problem I’m having with my 6 cylinder 1989 Jeep Cherokee Pioneer as it seems when my jeep cranks over and with a no start in which is almost every day, I now just spray starting fluid down the throttle body and it instantly starts so now I'm beginning to suspect the fuel pump lost it pressure. First I will bleed the fuel valve and check the fuel regulator. Does anyone know where I can buy an aftermarket fuel pump with a fair price?. I heard so far from Auto zone. Are they sufficient and reliable from Auto Zone? Any other suggestions are truly appreciated.

Well this morning I tried to start my jeep and as usual it would not. Tried the starting fluid spray and for the first time that did not work neither. Now I'm getting no spark. Could this be the crankcase sensor and does the sensor have anything to do with fuel pressure. Now I'm puzzled. I need help as at first he appeared to be a fuel problem, now it's appears to be a electrical problem. Any help is appreciated.
