ZJ's were made with a 4.0
Low-optioned models and some 2WD's had 4.0's. You can use that engine if you use only the long block. Swap your flexplate, manifolds, and electronics onto the new engine.

It wasn't only the low-optioned model Grand Cherokees that could be had with the 4.0L. In fact during the years the 4.0L was available, the only Grand Cherokee, both ZJ & WJ, that you couldn't get the 4.0L in was the '98 Limited 5.9 H.O. http://www.wjjeeps.com/engine.htm

During the 4.0's tenure, it was the base engine in the Grand Cherokees, the V8's were optional- that is until the 4.0 was put out of production by Daimler Chrysler's then head at the time German CEO who thought the 4.0 was antiquated and had too high emissions. Well, he was correct but it was also one of the strongest production engines ever made by any manufacturer and by far Jeep's most popular engine to date
But that's the modern corporate world philosophy... if you are making something that lasts, you better stop making it because if you don't you won't ever sell any new products. It's stupid and totally wrong, but that's the way the board rooms think.
All the post 1985 4.0 Jeep long blocks have the same Chrysler part number according to my Mopar engine guide. As stated, engine electronics and engine mounted accessories and oil pans, valve covers, manifolds etc can be a different story. So, you'll have to swap all the old XJ engine stuff on to the ZJ's long block.
